Florida’s governor said Tuesday that classroom teachers, firefighters and police officers age 50 and older will be among the next round of people eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

He did not state a date, but he suggested it could happen soon.

“Our goal is to do that as more vaccine becomes available,” DeSantis said.

Gov. Ron DeSantis made the announcement at a Hispanic specialty pharmacy Tuesday to announce the expansion of CVS in the state as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. The vaccines are scheduled to arrive Tuesday and scheduling could begin Wednesday for 81 select CVS Pharmacy, CVS Pharmacy y más, and Navarro Discount Pharmacy locations across Florida.

DeSantis had been encouraged to expand the criteria for vaccination.

Broward Mayor Steve Geller wrote him last week asking that people 55 and older, teachers and more first responders have access to Florida’s next vaccine rollout.
